Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange officially opens

The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) was officially inaugurated on 1 October 2017. The new institution will work to internationalise Polish science by supporting international research collaboration and academic exchange. Among NAWA’s tasks will be to provide grants to nationals of developing countries.

Masters and PhD students, young scientists, research institutions and NGOs will be eligible for NAWA scholarship programmes and grant schemes. The Agency’s goal is to enhance international cooperation and exchange between universities and research institutes. It will, among others, delegate academic staff to overseas research centres and fund the development of faculties created for foreign students.

Łukasz Wojdyga was appointed Director of NAWA. His previous assignments included Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and plenipotentiary of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for the establishment of NAWA.

NAWA will be also carrying out the MFA-sponsored Stefan Batory and Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programmes, a task which has previously been performed by the Bureau for Academic Recognition and International Exchange.
