Missionaries of Charity Orphanage adaptation

The Missionaries of Charity run an orphanage in Yerevan for 21 orphans under the age of 10 with developmental birth defects, such as cerebral palsy, hydrocephaly, Down syndrome, spina bifida or encephalocele. Most of these children use wheelchairs to move around. Due to their disability, they are unable to fully enjoy the benefits of nature and outdoor activities. The orphanage is situated in the Nork Marash District, an area with narrow and steep streets, virtually no pavements or greenery, cramped with houses enclosed by high fences. At present, the children can only move around in their wheelchairs along a dead-end street outside the orphanage. This situation leads to increased isolation and exclusion. For this reason, it is crucial to create a safe and pleasant area where the children could play and relax.

Moreover, the orphanage has no emergency exit, which does not comply with the safety standards. Except for being exposed to general risks, Yerevan is located in a seismic area, which means that such an exit is especially necessary. The exit will lead outside, from the floor of the building, through the garden.

Missionaries of Charity Orphanage adaptation

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 20 June to 30 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Yerevan and its local partner, the Missionaries of Charity. Its objective is to increase the level of safety and care that the disabled wards of the orphanage are provided with. The project provides for the creation of a garden, among others, preparing the land, arranging green areas, purchasing a “stork's nest” swing intended for disabled children. It is the only piece of equipment which children with this level of disability can use. Several children can use the swing simultaneously under the supervision of adults. A special door, emergency stairs and a gate will be purchased and mounted for the purpose of creating an emergency exit. A group of 21 disabled wards of the orphanage and their 5 carers will be the beneficiaries of the project.

The project was implemented from 28 July to 28 December 2016. Its objective was to increase the level of safety and care that the disabled wards of the orphanage run by the Missionaries of Charity were provided with. Under the project the emergency door and a gate were purchased, an access to the garden was created, the garden was arranged and a heating system boiler was mounted. Completing the construction of the emergency exit was impossible due to bureaucratic procedures. While ensuring that the most important objective of the project remains unchanged, the remaining funds were used to purchase the boiler, which proved to be another significant necessity for the orphanage during the winter season.

The project was fully funded by the Polish Aid and its value amounted to approximately PLN 64,000 (EUR 15,360). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
