Landscaping in front of the shelter for women and children victims of violence

The SOS Hotline for women and children, victims of violence, is a Montenegrin non-governmental organization with its seat in Niksic, which has been operating the national hotline for those experiencing domestic violence and a shelter for women and children, being the victims of violence, for 18 years. In 2015, the Social Welfare Centres in Montenegro recorded 310 instances of violence against children. A large number of children in Montenegro live at the poverty line and, according to UNICEF, every third child in Montenegro lives in poverty. In 2016, there were 14,500 children registered in Montenegro, whereas the total population amounted to 620,000. Domestic violence is a common and frequent occurrence. By reason of its scale, it is necessary to extend the scope of activity of the organisation, including improvements of the conditions of safe, high-quality care for children and women in the shelter by providing them with a place for entertainment and joint therapy.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 July to 30 September 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Podgorica and its local partner, the non-governmental organization SOS Hotline for women and children victims of violence. Its objective is to improve the quality of care offered by the shelter run by the organisation.

The Polish Aid funds will be used to develop the square in front of the shelter. Carrying out the works, painting and assembling wooden constructions for the playground will be contracted. An arbour with a table and chairs will be placed next to the playground. Then, the playground fencing will be painted in pleasant and colourful patterns (flowers, plants, rainbow, etc.). In the subsequent stages, educational aids, toys and blocks will be purchased. Regular workshops or therapy sessions will be organised depending on the needs of the children and women at the shelter. They will be aimed at developing empathy through effective psychological therapy as well as teaching the children and their mothers how to cooperate with each other. The purpose of the workshops is to teach them how to talk with each other, understand oneself and one’s own needs. The women and children experiencing domestic abuse trauma taken in by the shelter after they had contacted the SOS Hotline are the beneficiaries of the project.
