Improving women’s economic status through small scale agricultural projects in Jenin District

As a result of the political crisis, the level of poverty in Palestine doubled and one third of the population is unemployed. The problem also affects women, as their economic status forced them to take on the responsibility of supporting their family. At the same time, their opportunities and access to social welfare assistance are limited.

Women are not prepared to take on this role, they need to be trained and gain access to social infrastructure. The previous project co-financed by the Polish Aid in Jenin turned out to be a huge success. The present project is addressed to other villages in this area: Kufur Kud, Burqen and Jalameh. Altogether, there are 16,000 residents, the unemployment rate is 30%, and women constitute 70% of it.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 20 June to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Representative Office of Poland in Ramallah and its local partner, a non-governmental organisation - Juhoud for Community and Rural Development. Its objective is to improve the living conditions and prospects for women in three villages in the Jenin area, Palestine: Kufur Kud, Burqen and Jalameh. The project addresses the present needs of women and contributes to their long-term development.

The first stage of the project focuses on selecting the beneficiaries of the project. Then, workshops and training courses will be held, focusing on issues important for the region, e.g. farming practices. The 18 selected households will receive livestock and appropriate tools. Fencing and irrigation systems will be mounted. After this stage is completed, additional consultations will be organised for the beneficiaries.

Eighteen selected households run by women will be the direct beneficiaries of the project. Fifty-four farmers will be able to participate in the workshops and training courses. Moreover, ten men will be temporarily employed to help develop the households.

The project was implemented from 3 August to 15 December 2016. Its objective was to improve the living conditions of 18 families supported by women who found themselves in a difficult financial situation. Seven households received assistance in the preparation of their land for farming (preparing the soil, building the fencing and the greenhouse, mounting the irrigation system). The remaining eleven families received farm animals (sheep, goats, hens, beehives with bees). The beneficiaries had to make their own contribution to the project, e.g. if they received hens, they had to build their own chicken coop. In three selected villages, 54 farmers underwent training in keeping animals and cultivating crops. Altogether, the farmers had 72 hours of training. Ten men were temporarily employed and they received additional income for preparing land in the gardens for farming.

The project was co-financed by the Polish Aid grant amounting to approximately PLN 120,000 (EUR 28,600) and its entire value amounted to approximately PLN 160,000 (EUR 38,300). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
