Improving quality of early education by equipping a kindergarten in a rural community Al Ma'sara

The Al Shmoh Cultural Center is situated in Palestine, the rural area of Al Ma’sara, and it is the only cultural institution which provides assistance to the residents of the neighbouring villages. The Centre engages in all aspects of social assistance to the residents of southern Bethlehem.

In this area, there is no facility that would provide care for children. For this reason, the Centre is planning to open a pre-school for, among others, children of women participating in the projects organised by the Al Shmoh Cultural Centre. The children could spend there their free time in a safe and creative manner and benefit from the development opportunities offered by the Centre. At the same time, it would help increase development opportunities for women - the time devoted to caring for their children will be spent working and reading instead. It will also strengthen social bonds, which is crucial in a conflict area.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 20 June to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Representative Office of Poland in Ramallah and its local partner, the Al-Shmoh Cultural Center. Its objective is to create an early education facility for children in the rural area of Al Ma’sara. The construction and repair works will be carried out as part of the project to open the pre-school at the Al-Shmoh Center: adjusting the classrooms for the purpose of conducting classes and purchasing equipment. Campaigns will be organised for the residents to inform them about the possibility of attending the pre-school, and a festival for children aimed at strengthening social bonds will be organised.

The creation of such a facility will provide children with an educational basis and facilitate the development process for women, who will be able to spend their free time working or learning, instead of looking after their children. Moreover, children will be able to benefit from the assistance provided by the Centre from an early age. Therefore, children and their mothers who reside in Al-Ma’sara and the neighbouring villages will be the direct beneficiaries of the project. Initially, it is a group of approximately 30 children aged 3 to 6. The entire families and the local community are the indirect beneficiaries.

The project was implemented from 3 August to 31 December 2016. Its primary objective was to implement an early education programme in the rural community of Al Ma’sara, which could serve as the basis for teaching children and teenagers and help the women looking after their children to find time for work and personal development. The objective was fully accomplished by opening the pre-school, which is now attended by 30 children from nearby villages. The project provided for the renovation of the Al-Shmoh Cultural Centre, purchasing furniture, equipment and educational materials. A big room was converted into three smaller ones for different age groups, the restrooms were renovated and a small kitchen was assembled. Uniforms for children were purchased and teachers were employed. An information campaign was organised and addressed to the residents of the village to recruit children to the pre-school.

The project was co-financed by the Polish Aid grant amounting to PLN 75,565 (EUR 18,100) and its entire value amounted to PLN 82,162 (EUR 19,680). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
