Improvement of education environment of the Roma Children in Shuto Orizari - Skopje

There are approximately 20,000 Roma people in Šuto Orizari, Skopje. The inhabitants of the municipality are facing a very difficult social, economic and cultural situation, with over 60% of them being unemployed. Many families rely solely on social welfare, which amounts to EUR 40-50 a month, and on what they can find in garbage cans. Caritas Macedonia is trying to improve the situation of this social group within the scope of its limits and capabilities. By providing education and training, it helps to integrate Roma children in the Macedonian society.

One of the main problems faced by most Šuto Orizari inhabitants is a high illiteracy rate. At home, children speak only the Romani language, whereas lessons at school are conducted in the Macedonian language. The Caritas day care centre is a place where children can do their homework relating to different school subjects, it also provides them with professional assistance. Daily activities at the centre include, among others, educational and creative games as well as exercises aimed at helping them strengthen and extend their knowledge. Such activities are free of charge, they are conducted from Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 14:00. The day care centre rooms are also made available free of charge to the “AS Makarenko” school conducting evening classes. Financial aid and repairs of the old day care centre building are indispensable for the classes to continue.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 August to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Skopje and its local partner, Caritas Macedonia. Its primary objective is to improve the learning conditions and development opportunities for children. This objective will be accomplished by renovating the Caritas day care centre building, where classes are held. It will permanently improve the standard of the building and enhance the quality of education provided by the school. The project will also allow to equalize educational opportunities for Roma children, whose access to education is hampered due to the difficult financial situation of their families as well as language and cultural differences. The project provides for preparing a cost estimate and a schedule as well as ensuring supervision over the renovation works.

Pre-school and school children - students of 1-9 primary school grades will be the direct beneficiaries of the project. At present, 100 children attend the day care centre. The Caritas day care rooms are also available to the attendees of the “AS Makarenko” school, which has approximately 60 students. Three teachers, one Roma assistant and a project coordinator are also the beneficiaries of the project. The families of the children and the entire Šuto Orizari community are indirect beneficiaries of the project. The purpose of the project is to ensure that the Roma people are able to fully engage in the civil society and to eliminate the differences separating this group from the rest of the society as well as to enhance the level of education and integration of the Roma community.
