Good Energy School
With each year, interest in renewable energy sources (RES) is growing in Ukraine, as a result of the drastic rise in prices of energy carriers and marketisation of energy prices for consumers. With the growth of supply of RES systems, the demand for specialists in this area is rising and this is a lasting trend. However, the vocational education system in Ukraine is not flexible enough to confront the needs of the labour market, which can be seen in e.g. the lack of systemic solutions and education standards in the field of RES at the vocational school level.
An example of such a situation is the Ternopil Vocational School in Zbarazh, where the educational offer is inadequate to the needs of the local labour market, the teaching base is degraded and the skills of teachers are not regularly improved. The principles of financing vocational schools make it difficult to introduce new education specialisations, as there are not enough funds for raising teachers’ skills and developing the teaching facilities. Another problem of the school, attended by 282 students, with 200 living in a dormitory, is also the poor technical condition of the buildings. For example, there is no hot water.
Another problem addressed by the project is the low energy efficiency. It is estimated that about 30-40% of energy in Ukraine is lost in various processes due to the low efficiency and absence of mechanisms and attitudes that would ensure saving of energy. This also applies to the SME sector and municipal economy. The preparation of the ”Plan of Activities for Sustainable Energy Development of the Town of Zbarazh” opens the way for seeking grants and local funds for the implementation of activities that would improve energy efficiency.
Good Energy School
The project is implemented from 8 May to 31 December 2017 in Zbarazh (Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine) by the Innovatis Foundation (Poland) and the Ternopil Regional Branch of the Union of Ukrainian Towns (Ukraine) and with the support of the firm HEWALEX Sp. z o.o. (supply of collector systems and training in his field).
The project is aimed at modernising the educational offer of the Ternopil Vocational School (TVS) in Zbarazh, ensuring year-round access to hot water with the use of solar energy and the creation of conditions for the development of the town of Zbarazh in accordance with the principles of low-emission economy and development of entrepreneurship in the innovative field of renewable energy sources.
The project will provide solar collectors for the TVS, to serve a utilitarian as well as educational purpose. The collectors will use solar energy to heat water in the dormitory and school building. Under the project, two vocational teachers and 30 students will be trained in the construction and use of collector systems. The following will also be prepared:
-”Plan for the introduction of a new study specialisation in RES,” which will help the school board to take concrete steps to start this specialisation, and
- ”Sustainable Energy Action Plan for the Town of Zbarazh,” to improve the energy efficiency of the local economy and stimulate entrepreneurship related to the development and use of RES.

Under the project, two sets of solar collectors were installed and started on the school and dormitory buildings of the Ternopil Vocational School in Zbarazh, serving a utilitarian and educational purpose. On the basis of the started installation and donated teaching material, the firm Hewalex Sp. z o.o. trained two vocational teachers and 30 school students in the construction and use of the collector systems. Another project result is the prepared the Plan for the introduction of a new study specialisation in RES, outlining successive steps to start a permanent study specialisation. To improve the energy efficiency of the local economy and stimulate entrepreneurship related to the development and use of RES, the municipal self-government of Zbarazh and its ancillary units, representatives of municipal establishments and local entrepreneurs took part in preparing SEAP – “Sustainable Energy Action Plan for the Town of Zbarazh.” The entities taking part in this process prepared 15 charts of investment projects.
