Establishment of a specialist vision rehabilitation room in the Camillians' rehabilitation centre in Tbilisi

The beneficiaries of the project are people with visual impairment. The experience of working with people with disabilities in the Camillians' rehabilitation centre shows that 45% of patients have vision problems. The issue of vision rehabilitation is not widely known in Georgia and people who suffer from this type of disability  receive practically no support. The creation of a specialist rehabilitation room in the Camillians' centre will bring help to such people. People who are poor or reside outside Tbilisi will receive special care.

Vision rehabilitation involves a series of diagnostic evaluations and exercises to help the visually impaired recover from the consequences of vision deficits. It may serve to supplement medical efforts, but it may also bring the benefit of improved functioning, even when it seems that there is no room for improvement from the medical point of view. The vision rehabilitation process begins with the functional vision assessment. The results of the functional assessment constitute a starting point for exercises aimed at improvement. In the case of vision rehabilitation of adults, where the impairment is most often acquired, the purpose of the improvement activities is usually to regain maximum effectiveness in daily life and currently performed tasks.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 9 to 23 December, 2016, thanks to the cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tbilisi and the Order of the Ministers to the Sick (the Camillians) with its branch office in Georgia. The project measures will comprise the purchase of specialist equipment, its delivery and assembly in the Camillians’ rehabilitation centre.

The goal of the project is to fill the gap that exists in the Georgian health care, as there is an insufficient number of specialists, publicly available rehabilitation centres for people with vision impairments and defects. The goal will be achieved by creating a specialist rehabilitation room in the Camillians’ rehabilitation centre.

The Order of Camillians will be directly responsible for the implementation of the project, including the purchase and delivery of equipment as well as the arrangement of the vision rehabilitation room. The Order of Camillians is going to cover the costs of remunerating the specialised personnel and utilities fees.

For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: USD 1 = PLN 4.1749.
