Enhancing women economic situation by developing employment opportunities in Hebron

The Idna Cooperative Association for Embroidery and Handicrafts is a non-profit organisation with its seat in a Palestinian village of Idna, south-west of Hebron, located in the southern West Bank. The region is facing serious socio-economic problems, including a high unemployment rate and a significant birth rate. Since 2005 the organisation has been selling traditional Palestinian artistic handicraft in the Old Town market square, thus offering the association members the possibility of earning money and supporting their family. At present, with increased competitiveness of this type of services and a decrease in the number of clients (mostly tourists), the association has to introduce new services, continuously train its members and attract more interest in their products with the use of the media. One hundred and twenty women from various villages and districts of the West Bank are members of the association.

Enhancing women economic situation by developing employment opportunities in Hebron

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 20 June to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Representative Office of Poland in Ramallah and its local partner, the Idna Cooperative Association for Embroidery and Handicrafts. Its primary objective is to activate women, help them become self-reliant and improve their financial situation.

The project provides for organising training courses and purchasing necessary equipment and materials. Ten women will take part in the training course in treating wool. It is important to enhance interest in the products by promoting them in the media, including Facebook and other websites.

The members of the organisation, especially women, who participate in the training courses will be the beneficiaries of the project. Increasing the sales of artistic handicraft products will generate higher income for the women, thus making the members of their families the indirect beneficiaries of the project.

Enhancing women economic situation by developing employment opportunities in Hebron

The project was implemented from 3 August to 15 December 2016. Its primary objective was to improve the financial and social situation of women in Hebron by promoting their self-reliance. This objective was accomplished by organising training courses in treating wool and weaving carpets for ten members of the Idna Cooperative Association for Embroidery and Handicrafts, which lasted three months. The associated objective was the creation of a new product for selling in the shop in the Old Town market square in Hebron and the online shop - carpets. The carpets weaved during the training courses were sold even before the training was over. Introducing a new product which met significant interest among tourists is important for the members of the cooperative, whose income directly depends on the number of tourists and their preferences.

The project was co-financed by the Polish Aid grant amounting to approximately PLN 100,000 (approximately EUR 24,000) and its entire value amounted to approximately PLN 106,460 (EUR 25,500). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
