Enhancing educational opportunities of children in Gaza Strip by renovating Latin Patriarchate Zaytoun school in Gaza

Gaza is located in the southern part of Palestine. It has the population of 1.8 mln people, with only 0.05% of them being Catholics. It is one of the most densely inhabited places in the world, which faces various social problems, e.g. a high unemployment rate. The Al Zaytoun School Compound is located in this area - it is a facility which comprises a parish with a school and a pre-school.

As a result of the July 2014 conflict, the school, the parish and its immediate surroundings were deprived of electricity for 15 days. Some of the buildings were destroyed when the nearby buildings were bombarded. The Compound is in a critical situation in terms of both infrastructure and safety. The school has to be renovated to make sure that students can learn in safe conditions. Some elements of the façade, tiles, the roof, doors and windows were damaged. Also, all the broken parts of the bathroom fittings and fixtures have to be replaced. There is not enough room in the school for grades 11 and 12 to begin education.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 20 June to 31 December 2016. It will be implemented in cooperation with the Representative Office of Poland in Ramallah and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Its primary objective is to renovate the Al Zaytoun School Compound, which offers education to those who suffered as a result of armed conflicts, regardless of their place of origin, sex or denomination.

As part of the project, the two school buildings will be renovated, the condition of the classrooms and offices will be improved and qualified teachers will be employed. The renovation works provide for, among others, repairing the leaking roof, replacing doors and windows, mounting the electric panel, purchasing the equipment for teaching exact sciences as well as a TV and a laptop.

The 385 students from the Al Zaytoun district and neighbouring areas, teachers and the entire local community will be the direct beneficiaries of the project.

The project was implemented from 3 August to 15 December 2016. Its primary objective was to improve access to education for children in Gaza by renovating the school infrastructure. As part of the project, the school buildings were renovated, e.g. the roof and walls were insulated, the windows, gates and doors were repaired, cabinets and toilets were mounted. Moreover, cameras were installed on the buildings in the Compound to ensure greater security.

First and foremost, the students of the school and the pre-school, the vicar of the Roman-Catholic parish and two religious houses located on the premises of the compound benefited from the project. The project will ensure that they are safe and they can continue to serve the Christian community of Gaza.

The project was co-financed by the Polish Aid grant amounting to approximately PLN 120,000 (EUR 28,500) and its entire value amounted to approximately PLN 750,000 (EUR 180,000). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
