Construction of water supply network Leova-Filipeni-Romanovca - II phase of the project

Drinking water resources in the Leova District in southwestern Moldova do not meet the needs of the region nor meet sanitation standards. Currently, the water supplied by the water mains can be used solely for technological purposes. Spring water and well water, on the other hand, is often contaminated by oil residue. The existing water supply system is dysfunctional, as used equipment consumes a lot of energy and does not meet environmental requirements. In addition, it does not ensure access to running water for the residents of many villages in the region.

Connecting Filipeni and Romanovca, situated near the Prut River, to the water mains serving larger centres will provide access to running water for the residents of both villages. This will also have a positive impact on the growth rate of the region and the standard of living of its inhabitants. Not only will the local water supply system be improved, but also the overall state of the environment in Moldova.

Implementation of the project began in May 2014. The first phase consisted of the construction of the 8.9 km Leova-Filipeni-Romanovca water mains and the completion of earthworks for the construction of the platforms in Filipeni and Romanovca.

The project was implemented from 1 September to 31 December 2015 together with the Regional Development Agency South in Moldova, with the support of the German GIZ.

The aim of the project was to ensure drinking water supply security in the Leova District in southwestern Moldova. The addressees were 3,807 residents of the villages of Filipeni and Romanovca.

The project consisted of the construction of local water pipelines with connections to the water mains system (Platform B and V) and four reservoirs. The project also included development of the grounds adjacent to the reservoirs (Platforms B and V) and the construction of an access road.

The project complied with the guidelines of the Strategy for Social and Economic Development of the Leova District.

For calculation purposes, the exchange rate EUR 1 = PLN 4.2249 was adopted.

The planned actions in the project were fully completed. The local water pipelines with connections to the water mains (Platform B in Filipeni and Platform V in Romanovca) were installed and are currently managed by the firm Apa-canal Leova. Four reservoirs were built – two with a capacity of 200 m3 and two with a capacity of 50 m3 – together with essential infrastructure (water mains connections, wells). A new, 420 m long access road was made available for use. The grounds adjacent to the platforms where the reservoirs are located were also developed.

The project’s implementation provided access to running drinking water in the localities of Filipeni and Romanovca and also improved the overall water quality. Environmental conditions in the Leova District were improved and water supply was secured in the event of a drought.

Over the course of the project, the public was continuously informed about the effects of the project and the contributions from donors.
