Better diagnostics for children's healthier lungs

The University Children's Hospital in Belgrade was established in 1924 and is one of the oldest hospitals in the Balkans, children from Serbia, former Yugoslavian republics and other countries located in the region are treated there. The Hospital - as one of the two facilities in Belgrade, offers specialist assistance to minor migrants who are staying in Serbia.

One of the main problems affecting the Pulmonology and Allergy Ward is that it is impossible to examine the lung functions of children over the age of 6 in compliance with the standards of good clinical practice. The Hospital was donated a spirometer to examine the lung function in children. In order for the examination to be complete and reliable, before performing spirometry, it is necessary to perform the bronchoprovocation test by subjecting the person to physical effort with the use of a special medical bicycle (the ergometer). This test is considered to be a reliable criterion for confirming the health condition. Currently - without the ergometer, the test is not performed in compliance with the standards of good clinical practice. The ward does not have a professional aspirator, which would help ensure proper mouth and nasal cavity hygiene for children with a reflexive mucus expectoration disorder, which mostly affects children with disabilities. The existing aspirator is old and insufficiently adjusted to its professional use in the hospital. Purchasing an aspirator would help to clear the respiratory tract so that patients would be able to continue the follow-up therapy.

Moreover, the Hospital’s Emergency Care - Surgery Ward cannot prepare or heat up food for small patients waiting to be provided with medical aid.

Better diagnostics for children's healthier lungs

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 September to 1 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Belgrade and its local partner, the University Children's Hospital. Its objective is to improve the quality of diagnostics and the treatment of lung diseases occurring in children aged 6-18. The implementation of the project, i.e. purchasing the medical bicycle and the aspirator for the Hospital, will improve the diagnostics and the treatment of lung diseases occurring in children - the patients of the Hospital. It will contribute to a better quality of medical services. Purchasing kitchen appliances (a microwave and a induction hob), which will be used in the Hospital’s Emergency Care - Surgery Ward, in the medical personnel room, will allow parents and medical personnel to prepare warm meals for small patients (heating up meals and milk for children).

According to the data from the last three years presented by the Hospital, it is estimated that about 4,000 children will be the beneficiaries of the project.

Better diagnostics for children's healthier lungs

The project was implemented from 16 August to 30 November 2016. It contributed to the improvement of the quality and efficiency of medical services offered by the University Children's Hospital in Belgrade. The diagnostics and treatment of the pulmonary tract diseases in children were improved by purchasing a medical bicycle and an aspirator. The Hospital have not had a medical bicycle for performing the bronchoprovocation test by subjecting the person to physical effort and the existing aspirator  was old and not intended for hospital use. Moreover, parents and medical personnel are able to prepare warm meals for small patients thanks to the kitchen appliances purchased (a microwave and a induction hob).

The project was fully funded by the Polish Aid and its value amounted to about PLN 32,000 (EUR 13,880). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
